Saquon Barkley Signs Franchise Tag, Giants Get Back to Business
Temporary Contract Fix Resolves Impasse
New York, NY - December 10, 2023
The New York Giants announced Tuesday that running back Saquon Barkley had signed his franchise tag, ending a brief period of uncertainty surrounding his future with the team. The Giants and Barkley have agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $10.1 million, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Barkley, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, had been seeking a long-term contract extension from the Giants. However, the two sides were unable to reach an agreement before the franchise tag deadline on Tuesday afternoon.
The signing of the franchise tag is a temporary fix that will allow the Giants and Barkley to continue negotiations on a long-term deal. The two sides will have until July 15, 2024, to reach an agreement on a new contract. If they are unable to do so, Barkley will play the 2024 season under the franchise tag.
Barkley, 26, is one of the most dynamic and explosive running backs in the NFL. He has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his first five seasons with the Giants, and he has also been a productive receiver out of the backfield.
The Giants are hoping that Barkley can help them return to the playoffs in 2023. The team finished with a 9-8 record last season and missed the playoffs for the sixth time in seven years.
