1966 FIFA World Cup Squads

England Squad Announcement

On July 3, England manager Alf Ramsey announced the squad for the 1966 FIFA World Cup, which was scheduled to be held on home turf from July 11 to July 30. The squad announcement was made in Copenhagen, Denmark, where England were playing a friendly match as part of their pre-tournament preparations.

Squad Numbers

The numbers assigned to each player in the squad were generally based on the positions they played. Goalkeepers received numbers 1 and 12, defenders received numbers 2 to 6, midfielders received numbers 7 to 11, and forwards received numbers 13 to 17. However, there were some exceptions to this rule, with some players receiving numbers outside of their usual positions.
